Daniel Craig has opened up about his Knives Out character’s sexuality in a new interview.
Back in October, the film’s director Rian Johnson confirmed at the London Film Festival that Craig’s Southern detective Benoit Blanc was queer.
Yes, he obviously is,” he said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Johnson also announced that Benoit is set to have a partner in the Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, but the person portraying him would be kept a secret until it hit cinemas.
“There’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.”
Craig, who was also at the press conference, echoed similar sentiments stating: “No spoilers [but] who wouldn’t want to live with that person?”
A month after Johnson’s comments, the James Bond actor opened up to Deadline about the LGBTQ+ revelation and the lack of publicity surrounding Benoit’s sexuality.
“It’s all good. The less of a song and dance we make about that, the better, really, for me, because it just made sense,” he told the news outlet.
“And also, as I said at the LFF, who wouldn’t want to live with the human being that he happens to live with? It’s nice, it’s fun. And why shouldn’t it be? I don’t want people to get politically hung up on anything.”
Craig isn’t the only Knives Out star to express their appreciation for Benoit’s queer identity.

During the LACMA Gala on 5 November, openly queer singer Janelle Monáe told Variety that they initially had no idea about the character’s sexuality but loved the inclusion.
“I love. No, I did not [know]. But when I saw it, obviously as a queer, non-binary android that I am, I loved it. I love how it was just… it is what it is,” they explained.
“Representation is everything. So kudos to Rian Johnson – the writer, director – like we love you, and it always feels good to be seen.”
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery sees the return of private detective Benoit (Craig), as he attends a luxurious “murder mystery party” thrown by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton).
However, the innocent weekend takes a drastic turn when someone actually dies, leading the remaining guests down a mysterious, shocking, and twist-filled journey.
“Ladies and gentlemen, there’s been a murder, and the killer is in plain sight. For at least one person, this is not a game,” Benoit says.
Like its predecessor, the sequel is backed by a star-studded cast, including Monáe as Cassandra Brand, Kate Hudson as Birdie, Dave Bautista as Duke Cody, Kathryn Hahn as Claire Debella, Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel Toussaint, Jessica Henwick as Peg, Ethan Hawke as Miles’ assistant, and Madelyn Cline as Whiskey.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is now playing in cinemas and will be released on Netflix on 23 December.
