Fans want these actresses to play Britney Spears in The Woman in Me biopic

Fans have already lined up their picks for Britney Spears’ upcoming biopic.

Back in October 2023, the ‘Gimme More’ singer released her highly anticipated book The Woman in Me.

Described as “a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope,” the emotional memoir dives into Spears’ public breakdown, her high-profile thirteen-year conservatorship, toxic relationship with NSYNC singer Justin Timberlake and the double standards of the music industry.

Upon its release, the 275-page tell-all received universal acclaim and sold over one million units in the US in its first week.

Due to the book’s popularity, rumours have circulated that various movie studios and A-list actors were in talks to adapt The Women in Me for the big screen.

After months of speculation, Variety announced on 1 August that Universal Pictures secured the rights to Spears’ memoir.

The news outlet also revealed that Wicked director Jon M Chu and producer Marc Platt would develop the untitled project.

Shortly after the news was announced, Spears took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express her excitement for the collaboration.

“Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned,” she wrote.

While the forthcoming biopic is in the early stages of development, fans on social media have already started to put forward their favourite picks for the Princess of Pop role, including Tate McRae, Florence Pugh and Addison Rae. 

One person wrote, “I need Tate McRae to play Britney Spears for her upcoming biopic….imagine the serve that would be. Tate is the only modern pop girl who radiates that Britney energy.”

A second fan tweeted: “Cast Sydney Sweeney in the Britney movie immediately. She absolutely nailed her portrayal of Reality Winner, so I know she’s up to the challenge.”

However, the actress who has seen the most support in the fan casting debate has been Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.

“Idc what yall think. I need MILLIE BOBBY BROWN to play Britney Spears!!!!” One X user exclaimed.

Another individual echoed similar sentiments, writing: “C’mon yall! Natalie Portman as Lynne and Millie Bobby Brown as Britney Spears.”

While fans will have to wait a bit longer for casting information, we know that Brown has expressed an interest in portraying Spears.

During a 2022 interview with Drew Barrymore, the Damsel star gushed about the idea, adding that she related to the ‘Stronger’ singer’s story.

“I want to play a real person, and I think for me, Britney. [It] would be Britney Spears. I think her story, first of all, resonates with me,” she explained.

“Just growing up in the public eye watching her videos, watching interviews of how when she was younger. I mean, same thing with you. I see the scramble for words [in her interviews], and I don’t know here, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way and hers only.”
