Happiest Season director Clea DuVall has shared an update regarding a potential sequel.
Back in 2020, Hulu released the groundbreaking LGBTQ+ holiday comedy to widespread acclaim from fans and critics.
The film follows the story of Abby (Kristen Stewart) and Harper (Mackenzie Davis), a lesbian couple who attend the latter’s annual Christmas festivities.
Upon arrival, Abby discovers that Harper hasn’t come out to her conservative parents (Mary Steenburgen and Victor Garber), as well as her dysfunctional sisters (Alison Brie and Mary Holland).
Additionally, Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza and Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy starred in the film as Harper’s ex-girlfriend Riley and Abby’s best friend John, respectively.
The film, which broke Hulu streaming records, also made history as the first major LGBTQ+-centered Christmas film.
Over the last two years, fans have called on DuVall and the cast to make a sequel to the heartwarming movie.
In a recent interview with Digital Spy, the But I’m A Cheerleader star finally revealed if a second film is in the works.
“I mean, there’s nothing planned right now, but I would love to make a sequel,” she said.
“It was such a fun experience, and everyone is so good and so nice, and got along so well. It really felt like one of those lighting-in-a-bottle-type situations. So I hope so.”
DuVall’s recent comments come nearly a year after Plaza teased that another Happiest Season film was on the way.
During a book signing for her children’s book, The Legend of the Christmas Witch, the Ingrid Goes West star stated: “There’s going to be another one. Um. Yeah! Because my character deserves love too.”
While Plaza’s statement was most likely a joke, fans of the film have also echoed similar sentiments on social media – with many calling for a spin-off centred around Riley.
One fan tweeted: Happiest Season sequel with Abby and Harper getting married and Riley finding a gf at their wedding WHEN.
Another person wrote: “If the Happiest Season sequel doesn’t focus on Riley and her gf isn’t played by either Anna Kendrick, Dakota Johnson or Nikohl Boosheri, I don’t want it.”
Here’s to hoping a Happiest Season sequel will come sooner rather than later.
