Netflix has released the first trailer for the highly anticipated Knives Out sequel.

Directed by Rian Johnson, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery sees the return of Southern private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), as he attends a luxurious “murder mystery party” thrown by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton).

However, the innocent weekend takes a drastic turn when someone actually dies, leading the remaining guests down a mysterious, shocking, and twist-filled journey.

“Ladies and gentlemen, there’s been a murder, and the killer is in plain sight. For at least one person, this is not a game,” Benoit says.

Like its predecessor, the sequel is backed by a star-studded cast, including Janelle Monáe as Cassandra Brand, Kate Hudson as Birdie, Dave Bautista as Duke Cody, Kathryn Hahn as Claire Debella, Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel Toussaint, Jessica Henwick as Peg, Ethan Hawke as Miles’ assistant, and Madelyn Cline as Whiskey.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson opened up about what fans can expect in the forthcoming feature.

“I wanted to establish right off the bat that every single [Knives Out movie] is going to be a different animal. Each one of them must have its own reason for being and its own them,” he told the news outlet.

“It’s not just repeating a formula, but using this genre to create a whole new formula every time. Sometimes with series or sequels, it can become weird, stratified, and fossilised from the previous movies. The fun thing to me is genuinely creating something fresh and new.”

Craig echoed similar sentiments in an additional statement to the aforementioned publication.

“I wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing something I half-remembered. I wanted it to be something that was stuck inside me that I could drop into anything I wanted to and feel confident about it, I just reminded myself of who he was,” the James Bond star added.

Back in 2019, the first Knives Out film, which Johnson also directed, received universal critical acclaim and became a smash hit at the box office, grossing over $300 million worldwide. It also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

The film featured an ensemble cast including Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell and Christopher Plummer.

Due to its enormous success, Netflix secured the rights for two sequels, including Glass Onion. The contingencies of the deal were Craig’s involvement in both sequels and that the budget of each film matches the original, which was approximately $40 million.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is set for a limited release in cinemas on 23 November before its release on Netflix on 23 December.
