Jeremy Pope has taken on a new role as marine that hasn’t come out to his peers in his upcoming film, The Inspection.
The actor plays Ellis French, a young gay man who joined the Marines after his mother (played by Gabrielle Union) disowned him due to his sexuality.
The story is based on the real-life experiences of Elegance Bratton, who had not come out yet when he served as a Marine.
Bratton makes his narrative debut as writer-director debut of The Inspection.
The film will premiere at Toronto International Film Festival in September and close the 60th New York Film Festival in October.
Jeremy Pope is an Emmy and Tony-award nominated actor, who’s best known for previous roles in Pose, One Night In Miami and Hollywood.
The film also features Bokeem Woodbine, Raúl Castillo and Nicholas Logan.

In a statement via IndieWire, Bratton said: “I’m incredibly humbled that my debut feature film will close the New York Film Festival this year. So many of my favourite filmmakers have made an impact as a part of this illustrious program. I’m overwhelmed to be a part of it. And as a New Yorker, this is a dream come true.”
The film takes place around the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ culture in the military, where applicants were not allowed to be asked their sexuality.
Pope’s character, Ellis, gains feelings for his superior officer and is targeted by other Marines once he’s outed.
However, the feature also depicts how the people in Ellis’ life come together to support him.
