The director of Red, White & Royal Blue revealed the one worry Taylor Zakhar Perez had before filming his nude scenes.
On 11 August, Prime Video finally dropped the highly anticipated LGBTQ+ romantic comedy.
Based on Casey McQuiston’s acclaimed novel of the same name, Red, White & Royal Blue follows the passionate enemies-to-lovers romance between Alex (Zakhar Perez), the son of America’s first female president (Uma Thurman), and Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), a British prince.
Upon its release, the film received universal acclaim for its faithfulness to the source material and the chemistry between Zakhar Perez and Galitzine.
Alongside the aforementioned praises, Red, White & Royal Blue has also been lauded for its unapologetically queer nude and sex scene between Alex and Henry.
One fan wrote on X( formerly known as Twitter): “I cried during the red white and royal blue sex scene no one talk to me.”
Another viewer commented: “The intimacy coordinator on red white and royal blue did a fantastic job bc usually sex scenes are like deeply uncomfortable for me to watch but they did it really well.”
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, the film’s director, Matthew López, opened up about creating the film’s intimate moments – including Zakhar Perez’s one concern regarding his body hair.
“I have a funny story, that I haven’t told. Nobody’s asked me about it until you brought it up,” the award-winning playwright started.
“I’m on the way to set, and I get a phone call from my hair and makeup coordinator, Karen. And usually, I just go straight to set, and she’s like,’ Can you please meet me in Taylor’s trailer.
“And I’m like ‘Uh oh, Uh Oh! Oh shit, like, what’s going on.”
López then revealed that after going to Zakhar Perez’s trailer, The Kissing Booth 2 actor asked if he should shave for his upcoming nude scene.
“I was like, ‘Your face?’ [and] he goes, ‘No babe.’ And I’m like, ‘Alright, well, what do you want to do about it?’ and he goes, ‘Just look okay.’
“I have my hair and makeup person there as the chaperone because I didn’t want my career to end before it began, and Taylor lowers his pants, and he just goes ‘Look at my ass.’
“And I was like, ‘you’re fine, you look great.’ And he’s like ‘Okay, that’s what we thought.'”
López hilarious interview comes a few weeks after he revealed to GAY TIMES that the film’s team “took great care” in bringing the sex scenes to life: “What’s in the movie is absolutely essential to understanding who these two people are to one another.
“I was very clear with the producers from the beginning that we’re not going to shy away from depicting how two men have sex with each other. But, we’re also going to make sure that we never lose sight of the fact that it’s Alex and Henry having a moment of deep, emotional connection.”
