Through The Lens is an ongoing partnership between MUBI and GAY TIMES which explores queer cinema from every angle – from LGBTQIA+ actors and storylines on screen to queer readings of popular films which help draw out underlying subtexts.
Monica’ is a powerful, character-driven film directed by Andrea Pallaoro which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2022. Starring Trace Lysette as the titular character, it explores the emotional reckoning which occurs as a trans woman returns home to her estranged family in order to care for her dying mother.
Nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance for her role in ‘Monica’, Lysette has appeared widely across film and TV. Some of her best known appearances have been in productions such as ‘Hustlers’, ‘Pose’ and ‘Transparent’.
