Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has opened up about the film’s LGBTQ+ representation.
On 8 July, moviegoers will finally get to consume the highly anticipated film – which will see Chris Hemsworth return as the lovable Norse god.
Unlike his previous adventures, the movie is set to follow the titular character as he embarks on a journey of inner peace.
However, his period of self-reflection won’t last long due to the appearance of the galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher.
Fortunately, an array of fan-favourite characters are set to help the beloved hero, including Sif (Jaimie Alexander), Korg (Waititi), Jane Foster / Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) and everyone’s favourite bisexual warrior Valkyrie (Thompson).
While MCU enthusiasts are eager to dive into another Phase Four film, LGBTQ+ fans have been clamouring to find out if the project will have queer representation.
In an interview with Out, Waititi gave further insight into the film’s LGBTQ+ elements and its exploration of queer characters like Valkyrie and Korg.
“I put myself in the audience’s shoes and I said, ‘Well, if I was coming to see another Thor film and I’d see Ragnarok and the others. There’s a lot going on in that film. What would I want to see in this one? What would push it over the edge?'” he told the publication.

“The audiences we’re crying out for more of Tessa’s character being openly out and identifying as queer. And my character (Korg) in the comic books is queer, so I like those two characters [interacting] as well.”
The Our Flag Means Death star went on to express his excitement over the film’s queer representation, stating: “I just put it out there and, again, not trying to make a deal out of it, but it’s a pleasure, really.
“A really lovely scene with Tessa is one of my favourite scenes of the film, which talks about all of this.”
Waititi’s comments comes a week after Thompson echoed similar sentiments during her interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
When asked about the inclusion of Valkyrie’s bisexuality, she admitted that it was a “big topic of conversation.”
“We talked about it a lot. Because I think rightfully there’s this real want in audiences to see characters be very clearly queer or LGBTQIA inside these spaces,” she revealed.
Later in the interview, she revealed that the Valkyrie may not find love in the film before stating she was happy with where they “got to go.”
“I hope that she’s a character that fans continue to connect to, that we have a lot of time to explore her, in all of her humanity,” she added.
