The 10 US states with the highest populations of LGBTQIA+ adults have been revealed.
Approximately 14.1 million queer adults are proudly living across America and make up 5.6 per cent of the population, according to a new data release.
The research, which was carried out by UCL School of Law, studied data from the 2020-2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to estimate and percentage the number LGBTQIA+ adults across the country.
Washington D.C. came out on top as having the highest percentage of LGBTQIA+ people.
Although the study concluded that people who identify as LGBTQIA+ live in all regions of the US, the South is the most densely populated part at approximately 37 per cent of the country’s overall queer population.
In contrast, less than 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ people live in the Northeast, while 20.6 per cent live in the Midwest, 24.2 per cent are in the West.
California tops the list of the most densely populated state of LGBTQIA+ people, with 1.5 million queer adults calling the area home.
Recently in the UK it was reported that young Britions are gayer than ever according to an Office for National Statistics survey, which revealed 9.3 per cent of all 16 to 24 year olds are estimated to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual.
According to this new data in the US, 15.4 per cent of young adults aged 18 to 24 identify as LGBTQIA+, which works out at approximately 4.7 million people.
