CupcakKe has confirmed she’s safe after sharing a suicidal message on social media.

The 21-year-old US rapper, who has paved a career with empowering anthems and intense support for the LGBTQ community, tweeted on Monday (7 January) night: “I’m about to commit suicide.”

Several people contacted the local Chicago Police Department to check on CupcakKe – whose real name is Elizabeth Harris – including comedian and rapper Elijah Daniel, who tweeted that she was safe and had been taken to hospital.

Chicago Police later confirmed, telling BBC Newsbeat: “Officers went out a few times to check on Elizabeth. Once they got in touch with her, they took her to hospital – not for her injuries – but for a mental evaluation.”

Now, CupcakKe has spoken out for the first time since sending the suicidal tweet, telling fans that she’s safe and not to worry about her.

“I’ve been fighting with depression for the longest [time] … sorry that I did it public last night but I’m ok,” she wrote.

“I went to the hospital & im finally getting the help that I need to get through, be happy & deliver great music. thanks for all the prayers but please don’t worry bout me.”

Thousands of friends and fans, including singer Lizzo and frequent collaborator Charli XCX, have shared their support for the Chicago-based rapper, whose real name is Elizabeth Harris, on social media.
