Drag Race UK finalist Bimini Bon Boulash shared their “disgust” after a boy was attacked leaving Great Yarmouth Pride last week.
The 13-year-old was targeted by a group for “expressing his sexuality and wearing a Pride flag” on 3 September, according to Great Yarmouth and Waveney Pride (GYWPride).
“Homophobia is still happening and it’s heartbreaking to know that these people are being attacked and we can’t allow it to happen,” Bimini said of the incident, which took place in their hometown.
They added that it was “amazing” to see a Pride event take place where they grew up, as there previously “wasn’t much of a scene” in the area.
Bimini also highlighted another attack which recently took place outside one of the town’s nightclubs.
Norfolk Police said it takes incidents like this “very seriously”.
“Norfolk Constabulary takes these incidents very seriously and encourages anyone who witnessed these incidents to get in touch,” added Ch Insp Matthew Dyson.
GYWPride explained that although “Great Yarmouth as a whole has become more accepting and tolerant to people of various sexualities, genders, economic backgrounds, races,” and so forth, it still has “a long way to go in our fight for the right to live our lives in freedom and without hate.”
