Fire Island’s Joel Kim Booster issued a lengthy Twitter statement where he addressed remarks made by Billy Eichner.
Booster wrote and starred in feature Fire Island, a comedy which followed a group of queer friends on a holiday which takes an unexpected turn and pushed their friendship to the limit.
The film went straight to streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
His statement is in response to comments made by fellow comedian Billy Eichner in a recent interview with Variety.
Eichner’s upcoming release, Bros, is slated to be the first LGBTQ+ romantic comedy film to receive a theatrical release.
He stated: “this is not an indie movie. This is not some streaming thing, which feels disposable, or which is like one of a million Netflix shows. I need to appreciate that ‘This is a historic moment, and somehow, you’re at the center of it. You helped create it.’”
The actor was criticised for his comments. He later took to Twitter and clarified his remarks.
In response, Booster followed up with his own statement.

The 34-year-old wrote: “It seems like he was pretty inarticulate in his excitement about his movie getting a theatrical release, which is really f**king cool and something I’m sure the studio and his publicist is making him constantly talk about.”
“God knows I’ve said plenty of dumb s**t without a publicist’s help,” he quipped.
“I’m so proud of my movie and all the people who helped make it happen and am so grateful it was accessible to so many people on streaming, and don’t see it as any less valuable because of that.”
He concluded: “I truly hope you can enjoy both or neither of our movies without pitting them against each other (even though that is obviously a very fun thing to do and basically what gay Twitter was created for).”
The actor, who also appeared alongside Maya Rudolph and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez in Apple original Loot, confirmed he’d spoken to Billy directly.
