A man will appear in court today charged with offences following a homophobic attack in Brixton, the Lambeth Police report.

The Metropolitan Police reported that: “Two men were standing at a bus stop when they were assaulted by another man. The two men went to hospital for treatment to their injuries before being discharged.” The two men were on their way home from attending Black Pride, when the assault happened.
The incident took place on Brixton Road at approximately 22:30 on 19 August.
Jabbard Mabounda, 31, will appear in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 29 September.
Mabounda has been charged with one count of racially/religiously aggravated ABH and two counts of racially/religiously aggravated assault by beating.
At present it is noted that: “Both victims are being supported by a dedicated LGBT+ Community Liaison Officer. Their role is to support individuals who have been involved in hate crimes towards the LGBT+ community.”
LGBTQIA+ liaison officers rejoined the force earlier this year as part of the Met Police’s “commitment to rebuilding the trust” with the community.
This was a direct result of the Casey Report, which found that “there is deep seated homophobia within the MET” and a “complete overhaul” was necessary to address this.
