If the bill is approved then Washington will be the tenth U.S. state to ban the practice.
SB 5722 has been sent off to governor Jay Inslee for approval. If Inslee approves the bill then gay ‘cure’ therapies on minors will be made illegal across the state of Washington.
JoDee Winterhof, the Human Rights Campaign’s Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs praised the legislation, saying: “Children across the Evergreen State deserve to live their lives authentically and should never be subjected to the abusive practice of so-called conversion therapy.
“It’s time for Washington to join the growing number of states and municipalities who are enacting these critical protections. We thank the state legislators who voted to protect LGBTQ youth from this dangerous practice and now call on Governor Inslee to sign this crucially important legislation.”
If the legislation is approved then Washington will be the tenth state to have banned the practice for minors. The other states are New Jersey, California, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New Mexico, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Nevada.
However, even though the practice is still legal in most of the states, certain cities like Cincinnati in Ohio or Miami in Florida have also banned it.
Earlier this week, the EU voted to condemn the practice, and it urged all of its member states to ban it.
The text that the EU adopted read: “[The European Parliament] welcomes initiatives prohibiting LGBTI conversion therapies and banning the pathologisation of trans identities and urges all Member States to adopt similar measures that respect and uphold the right to gender identity and gender expression.”
