Zander Murray makes LGBTQ+ history as the SPFL’s only openly gay player

Zander Murray has made LGBTQ+ history after signing with one of the Scottish Professional Football League’s (SPFL) top teams. 

Back in September, the talented striker made history as the first Scottish senior football player to come out as gay.

“First, it feels like the weight of the world is now off my shoulders…It can be difficult, and you can feel very alone,” he said via the club’s website.

“I knew I was different for many years, but with other people in the game coming out, it’s been amazing.

“Hopefully, the SFA can work with other leagues and partners and look at support and drive how we help other players.”

Since coming out, Murray has continued to make waves in the football world with his LGBTQ+ activism and dynamic plays on the field.

On 13 January, the young talent reached another career milestone by signing with the SPFL team Bonnyrigg Rose. 

Prior to his transfer, Murray played as a striker for Lowland Football League’s Gala Fairydean Rovers. 

“Bonnyrigg Rose are delighted to announce the signing, subject to SFA clearance, of in-demand forward Zander Murray from Gala Fairydean Rovers,” the team said in a statement. 

By joining the League Two club, Murray has become the first openly gay player in the SPFL since Justin Fashanu played for Airdrie and Hearts in the 90s. 

The 31-year-old also expressed his excitement in Bonnyrigg Rose’s aforementioned statement.  

“I’ve played against Rose for many, many years, so I know the squad, what the club is about, the fans, everyone connected to the club, and the management team,” he said.

“I’ve been a long admirer. There have been a couple of occasions that I possibly could’ve had an opportunity to come to the Rose, but, for whatever reason, it’s not worked out. 

“I’m absolutely delighted to come on board now. I’m just buzzing to join the Rosey Posey. What a club. I’m now looking forward to getting onto that pitch.”

Murray’s move to Bonnyrigg Rose comes a few months after he told Sky News that “a weight was lifted off [his] shoulders” after he came out as gay. 

“Personally, the weight is lifted off my shoulders, mainly because I have accepted myself, and if I could inspire one person, then it’s done its job,” he explained. “The reach has been unimaginable, how many it has inspired, and I hope that continues.” 

We can’t wait to see what Murray accomplishes as part of the Bonnyrigg Rose roster.
