Demi Lovato has revealed that their 2015 bisexual bop “Cool for the Summer” was inspired by a sexual relationship with a fellow celebrity.
If you need a refresher, “Cool for the Summer” features some pretty NSFW lines that clearly hint at some kind of sapphic experimentation – “Got a taste for the cherry/I just need to take a bite,” being case in point.
And while, in the years since, Lovato has been able to publicly discuss their pansexuality, the song was released before they came out. In fact, the musician has even said that the track – which was featured on their album Confident – helped them open up to their stepfather for the first time about their queerness.
Now, “Cool for the Summer” is about to take on a whole new significance to Lovato’s queer fans – all thanks to a new radio interview on the Howard Stern Show.
While discussing the track – which was recently re-recorded as a rock song back in May – presenter Howard Stern asked Lovato if the woman they wrote the song for knows it’s about her, to which they replied; “No.”
He then asked if the woman in question happened to be famous, to which the musician responded: “What if she is?” They then later confirmed that, yes, their “Cool for the Summer” ex was a celebrity. Continuing to talk about the circumstances surrounding the song, Lovato revealed that the relationship which inspired the track was never public.
However, if you’re desperate to know who Lovato’s sapphic celeb ex is, you’re going to be waiting a long time – the star is committed to keeping that info under wraps for now.
Speaking on the show, they maintained that they would not disclose the woman’s identity as they are “in a relationship now” (ICYMI: Lovato is dating songwriter and rapper Jutes) and explained that sharing those details “would be inappropriate”.
