We’re big fans of the London Gay Men’s Chorus here – the 200-strong company has now been performing for more than 30 years, with several international tours, a whole host of major collaborations and numerous albums under their many belts. They’re currently in rehearsals for a new concert, ‘Proud’, which will be performed at London’s Cadogan Hall on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th June, the weekend before the city’s Pride celebrations. These are their first major concerts since October’s Halloween Ball extravaganza at the iconic Alexandra Palace.
Arriving in London during Pride month, this original concert will feature a vibrant and eclectic soundtrack that celebrates the power of the human journey as it battles against adversity. Themes including sexuality, religion and addiction will be examined through the power of song, with the idea of the ‘coming out’ journey being considered through a variety of lenses. Celebrating the courage of personal resilience using the power of the human voice, the London Gay Men’s Chorus will perform music by a wide variety of artists ranging from Madonna to Radiohead, from Sia to Coldplay, and from an array of popular Broadway shows.
Artistic director Simon Sharp said: “Proud promises to be an uplifting, inspirational and original programme from the London Gay Men’s Chorus. With new commissions showcasing an eclectic mix of musical genres, and moving testimony from our members, this story of triumph over adversity is sure to resonate with audiences of all backgrounds.”
For this concert, the Chorus’ fundraising will support the great work of Parkinson’s UK, alongside the Chorus’ own education and outreach programmes.
Kirsty Berrigan and Rebecca Landolt, from Parkinson’s UK, said: “We are so grateful to London Gay Men’s Chorus for fundraising for Parkinson’s UK. With more than 40 potential symptoms, Parkinson’s can devastate lives. We’ve made huge breakthroughs in the last 50 years, but there is still no cure and current treatments are not good enough.
“We hope that this fundraising challenge inspires you to get involved with Parkinson’s UK. There are lots of ways for you to get involved and support us – from volunteering at an event, to campaigning for better services. Without the generosity of people like you, our work would not be possible.”
‘Proud’ will be performed at Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square, with an evening show on Friday 23rd June, and afternoon and evening shows on Saturday 24th June. The Saturday afternoon concert will be Sign Interpreted (BSL) – more information can be found at the Cadogan Hall website here.
