Spoilers ahead for Sex Education season four.
Felix Mufti has opened up about their groundbreaking sex scene in Sex Education.
The actor, go-go dancer and drag performer plays Roman in the fourth (and final) season of the Netflix series, the transmasculine and fashion-forward member of Cavendish’s popular group, ‘The Coven’.
The trio also consists of Roman’s partner Abbi (Anthony Lexa), their trans leader who wants to transform the world for the better, and Aisha (Alexandra James), a woman of the Black, LGBTQIA+ and deaf experience with a passion for star-signs (and gossip).
Speaking with GAY TIMES, Mufti lauds the writers and creative team behind Sex Education for refusing to include tired queer trauma elements in The Coven’s narrative.
“It’s not the tragic trans story that often gets told,” they explain. “As a trans person I’ve seen enough of, ‘Isn’t being trans so hard?’ I think being trans is boss! It’s a blessing to share it with the world in a way that scares the world.”
As a trans person in the entertainment industry, Mufti says it’s “always a worry” that their “trauma will be exploited”. Thankfully, “that didn’t happen at all. I got to show the best sides of being trans.”
Mufti and Lexa collaborated with the Sex Education crew on Roman and Abbi’s sex scene in the final episode, which Mufti hails as a first for a mainstream television series.
“You never see two trans people having sex, ever, especially on their terms,” says Mufti. “Roman and Abbi get to have sex as trans people and say, ‘This is how we have sex and autonomy over our bodies.’

“It was so incredible because we really got to decide how our characters had sex. Everyone has sex in different ways, obviously, but when you add a trans layer to that, it’s even more heightened.
“It can be even more complex and comes with more intricacies.”
Describing the sex scene as “joyous and beautiful”, Mufti says it’s an honour for them to be involved in such a trailblazing trans storyline.
“For me, that was another priceless thing where we felt like we were creating a queer archive for people to relate to,” they continue.
“T4T people never see representation on the TV, so the fact that we could be the faces and the voices and the bodies behind that was really special.”
Sex Education’s final season follows Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) as they embark on a new journey at Cavendish Sixth Form College, while Maeve (Emma Mackey) studies at “the prestigious Wallace University”.
Season four sees the return of Gillian Anderson as Dr Jean Milburn, Connor Swindells as Adam Groff, Aimee-Lou Wood as Aimee Gibbs, Kedar Williams-Stirling as Jackson Marchetti and Dua Saleh as Cal Bowman.
More star power incoming: Mimi Keene as Ruby Matthews, Chineye Ezeudu as Viv Odusanya, George Robinson as Isaac Goodwin, Alistair Petrie as Michael Groff and Samantha Spiro as Maureen Groff.
Additional newcomers include Thaddea Graham as Sarah “O” Owens, Dan Levy as Thomas Molloy, Imani Yahshua as Tyrone and Reda Elazouar as Beau.
