The world premiere of the stage adaption of Brokeback Mountain, a new play with music, is set to take place at London’s new @sohoplace theatre in May.
We can’t wait to see how Annie Proulx’s novel – which many of us will be familiar with from the 2005 film adaptation – plays out on stage.
The show will star Mike Faist (West Side Story) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea) in the lead roles, with Fairground Attraction singer Eddi Reader performing the songs.
Ashley Robinson will be making his playwriting debut and the songs have been written by Dan Gillespie Sells, who wrote the music for hit musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. The production will be directed by Jonathan Butterell.
“Brokeback Mountain has been recreated in several different forms, each with its own distinctive moods and impact. Ashley’s script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments,” writer Annie Proulx said.
Talking about the opportunity, playwright Ashley Robinson said: “I’m honoured to be entrusted by Annie Proulx to bring new life in new form to her timeless and universal story. A story that means so much to so many, and will surely mean as much to a whole new generation.”
The first performance will take place on 10 May with a limited season until 12 August. More information can be found here.
