9-1-1 showrunner has revealed if the fan-favourite Buddie ship will happen after confirming Buck’s bisexuality.
Over the last few years, TV viewers worldwide have immersed themselves in the shocking and chaotic drama created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear.
Set in Los Angeles, 9-1-1 follows a group of police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and dispatchers who risk their lives to help save civilians from terrifying situations.
Since its release, the show has received acclaim from fans and critics, particularly for its adrenaline-pumping action, Bassett’s leading performance, and its emotional storylines.
One aspect of the show that has particularly captivated LGBTQIA+ viewers is the electric chemistry between firefighters Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz (Ryan Guzman) and Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark).
While the writers have portrayed Eddie and Buck as straight and close friends over the last six seasons, fans have shipped the two characters, affectionately naming the duo “Buddie”.
However, viewers were recently thrown for an unexpected loop when 9-1-1 (finally!) explored Buck’s sexuality in the fourth episode of its ongoing seventh season.
The episode, aptly titled ‘Buck, Bothered and Bewildered’, saw the fan favourite character share a (surprising) intimate moment with former firefighter and LAFD Air Operations pilot Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.).
After Buck tells Tommy that he’s been trying to “get his attention” (the sexual chemistry was, undeniably, off the goddamn charts), Tommy leans in for a kiss, leaving Buck stunned. The two then plan a beer date.
Of course, it didn’t take long for fans to understandably freak out over Buck’s exciting character development, with many saying it was a “long time coming”.
While many viewers have wholeheartedly embraced the episode, some fans have wondered if the recent development will lead to Buddie becoming canon.
When discussing the future of the beloved ship, showrunner Minear told TV Insider that a romantic relationship between the two firefighters isn’t in the cards…yet.
“Right now, Buck is exploring something about himself and he’s made a new friend. I can’t really even predict for myself exactly where the story might go in future episodes,” he revealed.
“Right now, Eddie’s with a woman. Eddie’s been married to a woman. Eddie has a child with a woman. Eddie also has very complicated feelings about, I think, his place in the world.
“I don’t know if they’re the same exact issues that Buck has, but we’ll be exploring some of that with Eddie coming up actually in the next episode as well.”
While Buddie’s future remains uncertain, Minear teased that the two characters will share some emotional moments in episode five over Buck’s bi awakening.
“It’s what you would expect. Buck and Eddie are best friends and because they’re best friends and because he has very deep feelings for his best friend, keeping something from him is painful, but it’s scary to completely turn over every card when you don’t even know what those cards are yourself,” he added.
“So I think we give it the screen time it needs in the next episode. The next episode really is about Buck feeling like he’s lying to his best friend and he can’t live with that.”
