Heartstopper star Joe Locke has explained how the powerful ‘Trans Lives Matter’ flag ended up in Agatha All Along.
Since the end of September, Marvel fans have immersed themselves in the magical miniseries.
Set after the events of WandaVision, the show follows Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) as she embarks on a treacherous journey down the Witches Road with the help of her newly formed coven: Billy “Teen” Kaplan/Maximoff (Joe Locke), Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp), Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn), Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) and Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone).
While Agatha All Along has received rave reviews for its stellar story, captivating special effects and campy horror, the show has also been lauded for its unapologetic LGBTQIA+ representation.
From Agatha and Rio’s groundbreaking sapphic romance to Billy’s adorable relationship with his boyfriend Eddie (Miles Gutierrez-Riley), the community has been treated to heaps of queer content across the show’s impressive run.
In addition to queer love, Agatha All Along celebrated the trans community, with fans noticing a ‘Trans Lives Matter’ flag hanging in Billy’s room during the sixth episode.
However, that wasn’t the last time viewers saw the impactful flag. In the explosive two-episode series finale, the important trans-inclusive message is prominently featured in multiple shots.
Of course, the flag has been a hit with LGBTQIA+ fans, with many taking to social media to share their reactions.
One person on Twitter/X wrote: “Billy has a trans lives matter poster on his wall. I know that’s right.”

Another viewer tweeted: “Agatha All Along is a good show simply for having a trans lives matter flag in Billy’s room.”
A third fan on Threads echoed similar sentiments, writing: “Can I just say well done to Disney for having a Trans Lives Matters flag, not only in the background of a shot once. But several shots, including long shots. It’s there, you can see it, it’s not a blink & you miss it thing.”
While the show’s talented set dressers and prop department brought all the creative sets to life, Locke recently revealed that it was his idea to include the ‘Trans Lives Matter’ flag in Billy’s room.
“There were a few film posters up there that I didn’t necessarily think that he would have watched. Like, very good representation for that time, but we’ve moved on from that sort of thing,” he explained to The Wrap in October.
“And so we replaced one of them with the ‘Trans Lives Matter’ flag. There was one – I mean all respect, our set dressers and prop department were so amazing, and there was so much incredible stuff there.
“But there was one sticker in Billy’s room, and it was like, the moon phases in a rainbow, and it said, ‘Not a phase’ underneath it. And I was like, ‘This is great, but it has to go. I’m really sorry, but this has to go.'”
Locke added that Billy’s room was one of his favourite sets in the show.
