Difficult People star Billy Eichner has praised Sex and the City for its “radical” portrayal of gay men and LGBTQ+ nightlife.
Since its premiere in 1998, the beloved HBO dramedy has made a massive mark on TV enthusiasts and the pop culture sphere.
The show, which ran for six seasons, follows Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) and Charlotte York (Kristen Davis) as they navigate relationships, sex and their friendship amidst the bright lights of New York City.
During its time on the air, the show received universal acclaim from critics, resulting in two equally popular movie sequels.
In honour of Sex and the City’s 25th anniversary, the Bros star opened up about the first time he watched the series and its groundbreaking portrayal of a gay club.
“My earliest Sex and the City memory is that I was home from college, flicking channels and I remember watching an episode or two. It was the episode where Stanford goes to a gay bar in his underwear,” he recalled to People.
“You did not see many shows at that point that had scenes at gay bars, let alone guys standing in their underwear for Underwear Night. The fact that Stanford was going to gay bars felt so radical and really pulled me in.”
Eichner added that at the time, the show delivered a more authentic yet “not perfectly authentic” look at gay men.
“My girlfriends and my gay friends were the exact right people to be pulled in by Sex and the City,” he explained.
“It was one of the only shows that created what, at that time, felt like a more authentic – not perfectly authentic – look at gay men and our relationships with women.
“The conversations the women were having felt like conversations that I was having with my friends. It was representing women and gay men, to a lesser degree, but to much more of a degree than existed in TV and films at the time.”
Eichner’s recent statement came a day after Variety revealed Cattrall’s grand return to the Sex and the City universe.
According to the publication, the Queer as Folk star is set to reprise her role as the iconic Samantha Jones in the season two finale of And Just Like That – Max’s revival slash continuation of the aforementioned series.
Cattrall, who shot her dialogue on March 22 in New York City, didn’t share any scenes with the cast or reunite with showrunner Michael Patrick King. She will appear in one scene, in which Samantha has a phone conversation with Carrie.
During the first season of the series, the two longtime friends had a falling out due to Carrie dropping Samantha as her publicist.
However during the season finale, the pair squashed their beef over text and agreed to meet in London for drinks.
