Attention Cruel Intentions fans! A new TV series based on the iconic film is headed to Prime Video.
Back in April, it was revealed that Amazon was working on a TV iteration of the 1999 cult classic.
At the time, it was unclear if the forthcoming series would air on Prime Video or the company’s free streaming service, Freevee.
Fortunately, on 4 December, Amazon announced that Cruel Intentions would officially go to Prime Video – with First Kill star Sarah Catherine Hook and Gossip Girl’s Savannah Lee Smith leading the series.
Additional cast members include Zac Burgess, Sara Silva, Khobe Clarke, John Harlan Kim, Brooke Lena Johnson, and Sean Patrick Thomas – who also starred in the original Cruel Intentions.
According to Variety, the new series is set to follow “two ruthless step-siblings who go to great lengths to stay on top of the social pyramid.”
However, instead of taking place at an elite private high school in the Upper East Side of New York City, the show is set at a posh college in Washinton, D.C.
The synopsis adds: “In this case, their focus is the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington D.C. college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do anything to preserve their power and reputations, even attempt to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.”
In a statement to the aforementioned publication, the Head of AVOD originals, unscripted and targeted programming at Amazon MGM studios, Lauren Anderson, expressed her excitement for the show’s updated take on the classic scandalous tale.

“From the ’90s cult-classic film to the 18th-century novel from which it was adapted, Cruel Intentions has captivated audiences with a story that transcends time,” she said.
“We are beyond thrilled to share the next chapter of Cruel Intentions intriguing interplay of deception, wit, and reckoning with Prime customers and couldn’t be more appreciative of the commitment, dedication and talent from this entire team – our incredible cast, endless clever writers led. Phoebe [Fisher] and Sara [Goodman].”
Goodman and Fisher, who are set to co-write and executive produce the series, echoed similar sentiments in their own statement.
“We are so excited to get to work together to continue the legacy of Cruel Intentions, a film that remains beloved by so many – including us,” they told the publication.
“We promise to make this next iteration as fun, irreverent, and boundary-pushing as the original, and are grateful to our partners at Original Film, Sony, and Amazon MGM Studios for trusting us to keep it Cruel.”
The original Cruel Intentions starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as two wicked step-siblings who plan to steal the innocence of their headmaster’s daughter, played by Reese Witherspoon.
Even though the film received mixed reviews at the time, the three leads received widespread critical acclaim for their performances, and the film has become a staple in popular culture.
Gellar and Selma Blair’s iconic kiss also proved to be historic at the time due to the lack of representation of same-sex intimacy in mainstream media.
