Trixie Mattel is set to bring her charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent to the football field in the upcoming TV series English Teacher.
The new comedy follows Morrison High School teacher Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez) as he navigates the challenges of teaching alongside his faculty peers – including history teacher Gwen Sanders (Stephanie Koenig), P.E. teacher Markie Hillridge (Sean Patton) and Principal Grant Moretti (Enrico Colantoni).
After he becomes the subject of an investigation for kissing his boyfriend/former Morrison teacher Malcolm (Jordan Firstman) in front of students, Evan undergoes a journey of self-discovery.
The official synopsis adds: “Evan suddenly feels that he’s under a microscope and is being targeted for his sexuality. Evan is left with one rule to abide by: no relationships with faculty… only to meet “Harry” (Langston Kerman), a charming new teacher who seems to be interested in him.
“Over the eight-episode season, we follow Evan as he navigates his relationships, his students and his fellow faculty and tries to answer the question: can you really be your full self at your job?”
On 5 August, Alvarez and showrunner Paul Simms spoke to Vanity Fair about all things English Teacher.
“People from every different part of life are basically forced to come together for a common goal, which is just to educate these kids,” Alvarez explained to the news outlet.
“What we enjoy is this idea that obviously the teachers are teaching the kids, but sometimes the kids are teaching the teachers how to live in this modern world that’s moving so fast, [where] it feels like the rules change every day.”
In addition to the show’s heartwarming storylines, the show is expected to feature of string of guest stars, including an appearance from Drag Race All Stars 3 winner Mattel.
According to the publication, the talented performer will be playing a drag queen who gets roped into upgrading cheers for a group of football players participating in a “politicized powder-puff game”.
While the two creatives refrained from sharing further information about Mattel’s sure-to-be hilarious performance, Simms revealed that she was their number one choice for the role.
English Teacher is set to premiere on FX on 2 September. Check out the full trailer here or below.
