Attention Euphoria fans! A German iteration of the show has been officially confirmed.
According to a report from Variety, Germany-based company Zeitsprung Pictures has optioned the series from ADD Content – a production and distribution company in charge of the international rights of the popular IP.
While the show’s directors and showrunner are being kept under wraps, writers Jonas Lindt and Paulina Lorenz are set to pen the scripts.
The upcoming German adaptation is now the third iteration of the popular Euphoria property – which was initially created and released in Israel.
Like the HBO series, the Israeli production – which Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin created – follows a group of high school friends dealing with drugs, sex, death and teenage angst.
In a statement to Variety, Zeitsprung Pictures CEO Michael Souvignier and producer Lennart Pohlig opened up about the importance of the Euphoria property and their excitement for the new adaptation.
“Euphoria is one of the biggest and most successful IPs, and we are very happy to develop the story for a German adaptation of this unique coming-of-age series together with the outstanding writers Jonas Lindt and Paulina Lorenz,” they said.
“We strongly believe that the universal topics facing Gen Z, such as identity, mental illness, addiction and sexuality, which they navigate constantly standing under great pressure to succeed and perform, must be told in a very specific local way – in this instance from the perspective of young German teens.”
ADD Content founder Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein echoed similar sentiments in an additional statement.
“Right from the outset, we recognised that Euphoria is a special series that could resonate far beyond the Israel market – tapping into the experiences of young people in a real way – which is underscored with the response to HBO’s gritty and compelling remake,” she said.
“We are looking forward to seeing how the German version brings another perspective to young audiences.”
Since its 2019 debut, the HBO series has received widespread critical acclaim due to its relatable characters, gripping storylines and representation of the modern LGBTQ+ experience.
Created by Sam Levinson, Euphoria follows high school student Rue Bennett (Zendaya) as she struggles with her drug addiction, grief and her tumultuous relationship with the new girl in town, Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer)
The series also stars Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs, Maude Apatow as Lexi Howard, Angus Cloud as Fex, Eric Dane as Cal Jacobs, Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez, Barbie Ferreira as Kat Hernandez, Storm Reid as Gia Bennett, Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard, Nika King as Leslie Bennet, Colman Domingo as Ali Muhammed, Javon “Wanna” Walton as Ashtray and Dominic Fike as Elliot.
For her performance as Rue, a teenage drug addict, Zendaya memorably became the youngest person in history to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2020.
