An update regarding the future of HBO Max’s new LGBTQ+ inclusive Green Lantern series has finally been revealed.
Over the last couple of weeks, DC fans were put through the wringer after Warner Bros. and Discovery cancelled numerous DC-related projects.
On 2 August, the studio axed the highly anticipated Batgirl movie despite the film being in post-production edits.
A few days later, Kevin Smith’s Strange Adventures, which was set to follow lesser-known DC characters, was also cut from the production schedule.
Due to the sudden cancellations, fans have worried that HBO Max’s upcoming Green Lantern series would also face the chopping block.
Fortunately, for DC enthusiasts, this is farther from the truth.
In a statement to TVLine, an HBO Max spokesperson revealed that the show was “very much alive” and will “definitely move forward” despite Warner Bros. and Discovery’s drastic studio shakeups.
Back in 2020, the LGBTQ+ inclusive superhero series was first confirmed by Greg Berlanti – who’s set to serve as the show’s co-writer and executive producer – during the HBO Max WarnerMedia Day in 2019.
At the time, the Riverdale creator said the show would be “unlike anything seen on television.”
The following year, HBO Max’s Head of Original Content, Sarah Aubrey, said that the 10-episode series would take place over a “span of several decades and focus on two stories about Green Lanterns on Earth.”
Since the show’s initial announcement, American Horror Story star Finn Wittrock has joined the series as Guy Gardener.
In the comics, Gardner is usually associated with the Green Lantern Cops and Justice League.
According to a report from Variety, Wittrock’s character is described as a “hulking mass of masculinity, and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980’s hyper-patriotism.”
British actor Jeremy Irvine has also been linked to the show, with reports claiming that he was in talks to play Alan Scott – a closeted federal agent and the first character to bear the Green Lantern title.
Here’s hoping that fans will be able to see the Green Lantern series sooner rather than later.
