The What We Do in the Shadows TV series is reportedly coming to an end.
Based on Taika Waititi’s beloved 2014 film of the same name, the show follows four dysfunctional vampire roomies in Staten Island: Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch).
The quartet are assisted by Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén), Nandor’s familiar who, upon discovering that Abraham Van Helsing is his descendant, becomes a skilled vampire slayer.
Since its debut in 2019, the mockumentary horror comedy has become a hit amongst fans.
Due to its continued popularity, FX renewed the series for a fifth and sixth season in 2022 – with the former premiering in July 2023.
Unfortunately, the show’s beloved gang of vampires will be hanging up their cloaks for good in the new year.
On 19 December, Vulture confirmed that What We Do in the Shadows’ upcoming sixth season will be its last.
Shortly after the news made headlines, fans took to social media to express their sadness over the show’s sudden end.
One fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) wrote: “Devastated that What We Do in the Shadows will finish up after the next season. I knew it had to end at some point but damn. One of the very best. I’ll watch it forever.”
Another viewer echoed similar sentiments, writing: “Nooooooo I love you, you little stupid ridiculous heartwarming show!”
While many were devastated over the show’s future, some fans had showcased a more optimistic outlook.
“Bummer to hear that What We Do in the Shadows is coming to an end, but I see it as a positive that the show is wrapping up the way it wants to, rather than suddenly being cancelled without finishing the story their way,” a third X user commented.
Throughout its run, What We Do in the Shadows received universal acclaim for the performances of the cast and its comedic storylines, earning 17 Primetime Emmy Award nominations – including two for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Additionally, the series won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series earlier this year for its progressive LGBTQIA+ representation. Guillermo memorably came out as gay in the fourth season and in 2020, co-showrunner, executive producer and writer Paul Simms revealed that all the characters are pansexual.
“All of them. All of our characters are completely pansexual,” Simms confirmed for GLAAD’s annual Where We Are on TV report, adding: “So we get a 100 percent from GLAAD on the survey. Where’s our award?”
He added: “Vampires are so accepting. They’ve seen everything. I remember, we were having one conversation early on, and I was saying, would vampires be [prejudiced]? Laszlo’s very old-fashioned — you can imagine him not liking Italians or something.”
“And then we decided, no. They’ve just lived so much time that everyone seems [the same]. And also, to them, it’s vampires and then all the humans. And who cares what kind of humans they are?”
While a release date for What We Do in the Shadows season six has yet to be announced, production is set to start in January 2024.
