HBO’s Los Espookys has been cancelled after two seasons

HBO’s critically acclaimed series Los Espookys has been cancelled after two seasons. 

The show, which was co-created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega and Fred Armisen, follows a group of friends in Mexico City who use their love for the horror genre to create a business that fabricates fake scary situations. 

Upon its release in 2019, the series received praise from critics and audiences for its hilarious storylines and unapologetic LGBTQ+ characters like Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) and Andres (Fabrega). 

After nearly three years off the air due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the series returned for its highly anticipated second season in September – which ended up earning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

However despite Los Espookys continuing to garner praise from TV viewers, HBO announced on 2 December that the show would not be returning for a third season.

“We are thrilled we could deliver the unique and hilarious second season of Los Espookys to viewers finally, more than three years after the series premiere, due to pandemic delays,” the cable network said in a statement (per Variety). 

“We thank Julio, Ana and Fred for this imaginative and delightfully bizarre world they created. We are not currently planning on a third season, but we would welcome the opportunity to work with this cast and crew in the future.”

Shortly after the news was announced, fans flocked to social media to express their disappointment in HBO’s decision. 

One person wrote: “I’m devastated about Los Espookys getting cancelled. A show I’ve only seen a handful of episodes, and it’s fully realized. I want so badly to carve out a space for Mexican television not everyone can stomach it.”

Another fan tweeted: “I am devastated that Los Espookys has been cancelled. Now it just feels like I’ve lost a show that represents me. I’ll miss all of those characters that I’ve connected with. Thank you, Los Espookys.”

While Los Espookys is no more, Torres will continue to partner with HBO on his two new projects, Little Films and Lucky.
