Netflix has cancelled the Rebelde reboot after two seasons.
Back in January 2022, the streamer released the first season of the teen drama, which is a sequel series to the popular 2004 telenovela of the same name.
Set at the fictional Elite Way School, the show follows first-year students MJ, Andi, Luka, Esteban, Dixon, and Jana as they form a band and pursue their dreams of music stardom.
The official synopsis reads: “As Elite Way School starts a new term, a familiar enemy–a secret society called The Lodge–threatens to crash the musical hopes of first-years.”
Following its January release, the series received rave reviews from RBD fans and critics for its dramatic storylines, chemistry amongst the cast, and evolving elements from past Rebelde iterations.
LGBTQ+ viewers also lauded the show for featuring three queer main characters, including openly gay teen Luka (Franco Masini), lesbian drummer Andi (Lizeth Selene) and Emilia, who identifies as bisexual.
But despite the LGBTQ+ inclusive series earning heaps of praise for its first and second seasons, Netflix officially cancelled the series on 6 May.
Sergio Mayer Mori – who portrayed Estebán Torres in the series – confirmed the news during an interview with Hola Mexio.
“It would be an honor for me to be able to do a third, fourth, and fifth [season of Rebelde], but that was no longer possible,” he revealed.

“It was Netflix. The producers told us, ‘Thanks for everything guys. But a third season is no longer happening.'”
Mori added that he had “no idea” why the series was cancelled before reiterating that it was “definitely not” his decision.
The Rebelde reboot is the latest LGBTQ+ inclusive show cancelled by Netflix.
On 3 May, the streamer announced that the Spanish rom-com Smiley would not be returning for a second season.
Based on creator Guillem Clua’s play of the same name, the eight-episode series is set in Barcelona and follows the love story between Alex (Carlos Cuevas), a bartender, and Bruno (Miki Esparbê), an architect.
Like Rebelde, Smiley received praise from fans and critics, with many lauding the chemistry between Cuevas and Esparbé and the show’s lack of queer trauma elements.
The series also received a nomination for Outstanding Spanish-Language Scripted Television Series at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards.
In addition to Rebelde and Smily, 1899, Dead End: Paranormal Park, Fate: The Winx Saga, First Kill, Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, Q-Force, Uncoupled, and Warrior Nun have also recently been cancelled by Netflix.
