Attention, The Last of Us fans! Season two is set to be an emotional ride.

Back in 2023, the HBO adaptation of the popular video game franchise became an instant hit with TV viewers for its stellar storytelling and stunning performances from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Due to its popularity and universal acclaim – boasting a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the show was renewed for a second season weeks before its season one finale.

“I’m humbled, honoured, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey,” Neil Druckmann, executive producer, said in a celebratory statement.

Since that fateful day, details surrounding the show’s sophomore season have been kept relatively under wraps, aside from the handful of cast announcements and two first-look photos.

Fortunately, on 4 August, fans were treated to a brand new video teaser of The Last of Us season two, previewing Joel and Ellie’s harrowing new journey.

At the start of the 20-second clip, which was featured in HBO’s “Coming to Max trailer, Ellie attends a local Jackson dance before it transitions to a close-up of the large forearm tattoo covering up her bite.

As the teaser progresses, Catherine O’Hara’s mysterious new character asks Joel if he hurt Ellie, which results in the former shakily replying, “No.”

After she further inquires about his actions, a handful of scenes flash across the screen, which include Tommy (Gabriel Luna) shooting at the infected, Dina (Isabela Merced) hiding in a forest, and a menacing clicker attempting to break a door down.

The first-look footage ends with Joel defiantly exclaiming that he saved Ellie.

The brief teaser was an immediate hit with fans, who took to social media to express their excitement for the forthcoming season.

One X, formerly known as Twitter, user wrote: “I’m gonna be sooooo annoying about this show until it’s out y’all prepare your feeds.

Another fan tweeted: “Three seconds of dramatic Catherine O’Hara in this trailer made me realize how much I crave more dramatic Catherine O’Hara roles. She needs her Oscar.”

A third fan added: Yessssss. Still prolly my favorite game experience of all time. Really curious how season 2 of the show is gonna go.

The Last of Us season two is set to pick up after the events of the intense season one finale – which saw Joel violently refuse to give Ellie to the Fireflies for their medical research.

According to HBO, season two will be released in 2025.
