Max

Max has finally revealed the future of Hacks, and fans are rightfully gagging.

Spoilers ahead.

Back in 2021, TV viewers were first treated to the Max original series, which follows the volatile professional/personal relationship between writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) and legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart).

Since its debut, Hacks has garnered critical acclaim and earned numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy.

On 2 May, fans were finally treated to the dramedy’s third season following an extended hiatus.

The nine episodes pick up a year after the events of the season two finale, which saw Deborah fire Ava, and explores the pair’s complicated and awkward new dynamic.

The synopsis reads: “A year after parting, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is riding high off the success of her standup special while Ava (Hannah Einbinder) pursues new opportunities back in Los Angeles.”

Like its past entries, Hacks’ third season was an immediate hit with both viewers and critics, with many praising the writing and the cast’s performances.

Fortunately, fans didn’t have to wait months for Max to announce the show’s fate.

On 30 May, the same day as its season finale, the streamer announced that Deborah, Ava and the rest of the Hacks gang would return for a fourth season.

“We congratulate Hacks’ brilliant cast and crew and our partners at Universal Television,” Sarah Aubrey, head of Max Original Programming, said in a statement.

“Hacks is a masterfully crafted comedy delivering laughs and sharp insights about the vulnerability and joy of sharing a dream. We couldn’t be happier to give viewers another season with Deborah, Ava, and the rest of the Hacks family.”

Since the news was announced, fans of the LGBTQIA+ inclusive series have taken to social media to express their excitement over the renewal.

One viewer on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “Finally some good news out of Max! Hacks has been renewed!”

Another fan added: “Seated for season 4 of Hacks. The HBO Max employees are scared and asking me to leave because “it hasn’t started filming yet” but I’m simply too seated.”

A third person tweeted: “Just finished #Hacks, and this last scene was everythingggggggggg! I love this show so fugging much. I cannot wait for season 4, baby!”

In the season three finale, Deborah achieved her dream of landing a hosting gig for a late-night television show.

However, it wouldn’t be a Hacks season finale without some juicy drama between Deborah and Ava, with the latter blackmailing her boss to secure the head writer position.

In a recent interview with The Wrap, the creators of the series, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, teased what fans can expect in season four.

“We want to speak to the idea of when you get your dream job, there is a whole other set of things that come into play,” Stasky explained.

“You think it’s going to be one way, and it is not. I think you get your white wale, and then you’re like, ‘Oh, what do I do with this whale?'”
