Scream 6 star Jenna Ortega teased that Wednesday season two will feature more horror elements and less romantic storylines.

Back in November, fans of the beloved Addams Family character were finally treated to the eight-episode fantasy teen drama.

The show, which is executive produced by Tim Burton, follows Wednesday (Ortega) as she enrols in the mysterious Nevermore Academy – which was once attended by her parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán).

As she tries to navigate her new surroundings, the 16-year-old soon finds herself with psychic abilities and at the centre of a local murder investigation.

Shortly after its release, the series earned praise from both critics and viewers for its angst-filled storylines, and Ortega’s incredible portrayal of the titular character.

The series also broke an array of streaming records for Netflix and gained a dedicated LGBTQ+ fanbase – who shipped Wednesday with her optimistic werewolf roommate Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers).

After nearly two months of radio silence, the beloved show was renewed for a second season by the long-running streaming service.

In addition to its renewal, Ortega has also been tapped to executive produce the new batch of episodes.

During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the You star opened up about what fans can expect from season two.

“I think we want to up the horror aspect a little bit, then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation and just let her be her own individual and fight her own crime,” she revealed.

This isn’t the first time that Ortega has expressed her disappointment over her character’s romantic storylines.

In a recent episode of the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, the X star said that Wednesday’s season one love triangle between Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White) and Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) “made no sense.”

“Everything that she does, everything that I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Here being in a love triangle made no sense,” she explained.

Elsewhere in the interview, Ortega opened up about pushing back against some of the lines she deemed out-of-character for Wednesday.

“I don’t think I’ve ever put my foot down on a set in the way that I had to on Wednesday because it’s so easy to fall into that category, especially with this type of show,” she said.

“There was a line about this dress that she has to wear for a school dance, and she says, ‘Oh, my god, I love it! I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’ And I had to go, ‘No, there’s no way.'”

Ortega added that even though she was “very protective” of Wednesday, she understood why the writers gave her character a romantic arc.

“You can’t lead a story and have no emotional arc because then it’s boring and nobody likes you,” she explained.
